How to Use Free Traffic Sources – 3 Effective Ways to Get Free Traffic

Just about everywhere you look online there are products designed to help you get traffic to your website.  Facebook, for example, has become very focused on promoting paid methods of getting traffic, for example through Promoted and/or Sponsored Posts and Facebook Ads.  Then there are those marketers who are huge proponents of Pay Per Click (PPC) ads.

All of the above, and many other paid methods, can be very effective and usually give faster results.  However, it is possible to build a successful online business without paid traffic.

Free Traffic Sources

Many entrepreneurs and small business owners are currently operating their online business with limited financial resources.  If you are bootstrapping then be assured there are free traffic sources that can be implemented., and are used successfully by marketers making five and six figures annually.

1.            Search Engine Optimization

With the various Google updates SEO has become more challenging, but it remains one of the most effective ways, if not the most effective way, to get free traffic.  It does take more time and effort and the results can be slow to see.  Certain factors are key to success: ,

a. Taking action consistently

b. Providing good, relevant content

c. Being targeted in your niche

d. Getting backlinks, which are like votes, to your website

2.            Video Marketing

Many of us hesitate to do videos because we may not like to be in front of the camera, but there are many other methods, including doing PowerPoint Presentations with voice-overs.  There are several advantages to video marketing:

a. You can brand yourself in a short time

b. Videos can be uploaded to many video-sharing sites quickly

c.  You are perceived as an expert on your topic so that people want to learn more about what you do and visit your website

d. You can get lots of backlinks from the video-sharing sites.

3.           Social Media Marketing

Social Media can be very effective for driving traffic to your website, especially when you take advantage of the various options.

a.  Social Media sites like Facebook Fan Pages, a well-optimized LinkedIn Profile, followers on Twitter, among others are great for inviting your connections away from those social settings and back to your website where you can continue to build relationships with them.

b.  Then there are sites like StumbleUpon and Digg that can generate traffic back to your website.

For each of these to be effective you must stay in the conversation.  Your followers must get to know you as someone who has meaningful content to share, and they must also want to interact with you as they get to know, like, and trust you.

The key to using free traffic sources to grow your online business is to be consistent.  Consistency with high quality content, and consistency with your message to your target market.

What are some other free traffic sources you use in your business to get traffic to your website?

Get Your To Do Lists Done: Manage Your Lists for Greater Productivity

To Do List“To-Do lists are a waste of time.”  “I love to have To-Do lists in different formats.”  “I could not live without my To-Do lists.”  “I don’t have time to write up To-Do lists.”  The debates and difference of opinions continue.  Some people view their To-Do lists as vital to their productivity, while others see it as a hindrance.

How about you?  Do you regularly work with To-Do lists? Do you have a way to measure how useful they are to you?  If you do not use them, why don’t you?  Did you try them and saw no increase in productivity?  Therein lays the key: You must manage your list for greater productivity.  Your list must not be allowed to manage you.

In an interview with Investors Business Daily Leadership Coach Eric Papp noted that, “To-do lists are productive.  People who make them are on the right track.”  He however noted that the reason why many people found themselves frustrated is that they include too many items on their To-do list.  Because of including too many items, and not being able to complete them, people end up feeling overwhelmed and frustrated.  Rather than being helpful, your To-do list can become a ‘guilt-list’ where you focus more on what you’ve not done, rather than what you’ve accomplished.

How can you get your To-Do lists done and manage your lists for greater productivity?  Here are some recommendations I’ve put together from various experts, many of which have been extremely helpful for me and which you may also find very helpful.

1.            Control the urge to check emails: Many of us find it hard to settle down to starting our day before checking our emails.  As entrepreneurs we feel we just have to check if something needs our immediate attention.  What happens an hour later?  We’ve gone off into the email hole where we’ve read like after link and checked out products on the Warrior Forum or other affiliate products…and nothing that takes us closer to our goal has been done.

Recommendation:  Begin your day with a task that’s important to your business and check emails later.  If you want to be sure that nothing urgent escapes your attention, have your email set up so that it shows snippets of the message without you having to open the mail.  Scroll through and if there’s nothing urgent (and you’d know from the subject or snippet), do not open!

2.            Create a long-term and short-term list:  Many of us only create a priority list so almost everything becomes a priority.  Not everything in your business or family can be at the same priority level.

Recommendation:  Keep a list with ongoing things you know you want to do, say in the second quarter of the year.  Then on a separate sheet of paper, start a priority list where you select four items from your ongoing list and transfer them to the priority list in order of priority.  When you do this you will also include the date for completion for each of the tasks on this priority list.  You should also include who will complete each task on this list.  Some things may need to be completed by you, while others may be outsourced.

3.            Be realistic: Many entrepreneurs work a full-time job in addition to working on and in their own business.  Whether that’s the case with you, or you’re able to work exclusively for yourself, keep in mind that not every moment of every day is going to be productive time.

Recommendation:  Identify your most productive hours in each day.  Some people manage to do from 5:00 – 8:00 a.m. what others take eight hours to do.  Others are very productive at nights, especially when everyone is asleep and they’re able to work uninterruptedly for three or four hours.  Do not pick more than four tasks, preferably three, as priorities for each day and spend focused time completing those tasks.  Anything else is a bonus.  You’ll feel a deep sense of accomplishment and re-energized to do more the next day.

4.            Break down large projects: If you have a large task to do like writing an eBook or a book for Kindle, or any other large project, it can be overwhelming when you look at it as one thing you have to do.

Recommendation: Break each project down into bite-size prioritized tasks.  It may simply be to spend just 15 minutes two times per day writing on the topic.  When you break down the tasks and can check off each at the end of your day, it’s a different feeling from having “Write four pages for book” appearing on your priority list every day. You could surprise yourself with how much you’re able to accomplish in short bursts.

I hope these points can help to shift your mindset regarding the use of To-Do lists.  Now start to get your To-Do lists done so you can manage your lists for greater productivity.  I’d love to hear your views of To-Do lists.

4 Ways to Build Engagement on Social Media Platforms

As social media platforms increase at a rapid rate and the actual number of persons who participate in social media explode, it becomes more challenging to get your voice heard above the ‘noise’, and even more to get your message out to your target market.

While it can be a challenge it’s important to reach out and connect, and have others connect with you – like your posts, share them, leave comments, and engage with you.  It can be disheartening to post content on your blog, Facebook page, LinkedIn status updates, Twitter (just to name some platforms) and there’s no response.  There are some basic steps you can take to build engagement on social media platforms. Let’s just focus on your Facebook page.

1)            Prior to creating your Facebook page it’s important to identify your objective for your page because the success of your page is going to depend on the strategies you implement to achieve your objective. These will include your branding, your posts, links, etc.

2)            Your marketing message must be targeted, which means you must know who your target audience, or ideal client, is.

3)            Tell people what you want them to do.  Do not assume people will know what you want of them.  Invite them to ‘like’ your post, share your updates, and ask them to leave comments. Many people may not know how important leaving comments can be to improving the Edgerank of your Facebook page.  It is very important because Facebook decides who to show your status updates to based on who liked or commented on your page.

4)            Be sure to add to the conversation.  Just as you want others to interact with you , you want to be sure to do the same by visiting blogs posts in your niche, other Facebook pages and leave comments, like posts and engage with others.

Remember if you give generously it will come back to you and the rules of engagement for Facebook and other social media platforms are no exception.  It’s important to give if you want to build engagement on social media platforms.

What other ways do you build engagement on your blog and social media platforms?  Please share in the comments below.

Conversation with a Local Business Owner About Marketing Tools

local business ownerOnline Marketing Consultant (OMC):  Your website is really beautiful.  Your designer did a great job!  However, there are two things I’m looking for that appear to be missing.

Business Owner:  I spent a lot of money on that website so it should have everything I need.

OMC:  I was looking for an opt-in box – a way for you to collect names and email addresses -  subscribers with whom you can stay in contact and build a relationship with them, but also sell products and services to.

Business Owner:  Well, we have a contact form so they can send us questions on any of our products.

OMC: And, that’s  great.  But you just said they can send you questions if they want more information.  What I’m talking about starts with you. You should offer your prospects an opportunity to get to know you on a deeper level. As you are aware, people do business with people they know, like, and trust.

By offering something of value, as simple as a Checklist or as detailed as an eBook that is centered around topics related to your business, in exchange for their name and email address, you’re opening the way to build that relationship.

Business Owner:  Well, can you be a little more specific about what I could give them?

OMC: Well, as a Plastic Surgeon, you could create a Checklist or Guide on 10 Things To Do After Your Surgery or something like Your 7-Day Guide to Taking Care of Your Skin After Your Procedure. You know the questions your clients ask you and what they need help with after they leave your office.  This document would solve a problem that many of your clients have. A good guideline is to make sure that it is something valuable; something you could charge for, if you choose to do so.

Another thing you want to keep tabs on. Do you have any idea how many people visit your website on a daily or weekly basis.

Business Owner: No idea, unless they call us or send us a message on the contact form.

OMC: Ok, that can be easily corrected by adding Google Analytics to your website.  Google Analytics gives you detailed information on how many people are visiting your site, where they’re coming from, what site they came from to get to your site, what keywords they used to find you, etc.  Do you have the log-in information for your website?

Business Owner:  Yes, the guy gave it to me.

OMC: Great. My team will verify if it’s been installed, and if not we can add it for you. At the same time we want to make sure that all of your keywords are up-to-date and geo-targeted.

One of the most important things you want to do that increases your success online is to build a relationship with your customers and prospects.  You don’t want one-time customers.  Instead, you want to increase T.O.M.A. (Top of Mind Awareness) so that you and your business are the first that come to mind when they’re thinking of using the service you provide or purchasing products you carry.  You want to have customers who buy from you again and again and become your raving fans. Does that sound like something that would appeal to you?

In any market there is going to be a lot of competition, so it becomes even more important to build the KLT factor we talked about earlier, and to spend some time on a regular basis optimizing your website.

Business Owner:  But, I’m already up to my neck in work.  I really do not have time to do the kind of follow-up you’re suggesting.  That would be just time-consuming.

OMC:  I can understand that you are extremely busy running your business.  We can teach a member of your staff what to do, or my team and I can do it for you.

We offer a 30-minute complimentary strategy session during which we talk about your business and your goals and objectives. If you’d like to schedule your strategy session, please email us at yjones [at] mysuccesscircleonline.com with Strategy Session in the subject line.

Social Media and Small Business – Basic Tips

Many small business owners recognize the connection between social media and small business, and the need to have an active presence online.  Whether you prefer to personally do all of your social media and online activities yourself or have someone in your office do them, it’s important to know where you want to start.

Congratulations on being a business owners who is ready to embrace social media, and the question I usually get at this point is, “Where should I focus my attention first?”  The following are basic guidelines to get you started or to focus on social media for your business.

1.            Decide on your brand.  You may already have a logo, colors you use in your business, etc.  but your brand is also a reflection of who you and your company are and what you represent to your customers and prospects so that you can have in mind very clearly the image you want to portray and message you want to convey through your online activities.

2.            Create profiles on four of the top six social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google +.  The other two top platforms are YouTube and Pinterest.  If your business has a lot of graphic content then you may want to add Pinterest as soon as possible, or initially substitute Pinterest for Twitter.  I say that with reserve as Twitter, of itself,  is a dynamic platform that helps with community building.

3.            Start a WordPress blog. One immediate advantage of adding a blog to your website is that by adding valuable content that’s updated regularly, this will attract the search engines to visit your website.  Your blog will also change your website from a static or magazine site to an active site with new, relevant information.

4.            Decide who on your team, where possible, will be responsible for listening to conversations online and responding.  They also must clearly understand how you want to handle questions from prospects and clients as this will affect your brand and reputation.

Twitter is a great platform for keeping up to date with what’s happening in your industry.  Responding to direct comments or questions in a timely manner is important to your business and reputation, but keeping tabs on conversations affecting your market is equally valuable.

Training and education on the nuances of social media and small businesses  are essential to you and your team.  Changes are constantly being made on various social medial platforms, hence the need to connect with thought leaders and those who are staying on top of these changes.

Do you have a system in place for staying on top of the changes to how social media affects small businesses?

How Do You Create a Mindset for Building Client Relationships

create a mindset for building client relationshipsHaving a vision for your business gives you a direction and a clear path to travel on in pursuit of that vision.  It gives you a reason for working diligently in your business because you have a purpose. Building client relationships should be an integral part of your vision.  How do you create a mindset for building client relationships?

Mary Kay Ash, who has been described as the #1 Female Entrepreneur of the 20th century said it succinctly, “Nothing happens until you sell something!”  This means that whether you are product-based or service-based, your customers and clients form the basis of your success.  If they do not utilize your services or buy your products, you’re out of business.  It’s therefore imperative to incorporate customer service strategies and building client relationships in your vision plan.

Building strong client relationships cannot rely on haphazard methods.  At best, these will be hit and miss.  This is not a formula that will lead to effective results in providing superior client or customer care.  Instead, you must create a mindset for building strong client relationships and be consistent in delivering superior customer service.  What are three simple, but effective ways this can be done?

Demonstrate Integrity

Your clients or customers will recognize if you’re coming from a place of integrity.  They will see this in the way you communicate with them, how you keep your promises, as well as your public side – online or offline.  Honesty and sincerity will be your Trademark.  While deceptive marketing strategies may often give immediate rewards, the results are at best short-term.  That’s because you cannot build a lasting business that’s based on a faulty foundation.  On the other hand, when your business is built on a foundation of trust, you will attract this from your customers.

For example, your ebook or program must align with the points outlined in your Sales Letter.  People must receive what you promised them.  Not only will they request a refund, and even if they don’t, they likely would not purchase anything you offer in the future as they no longer view you as a trustworthy person.   How about the bonuses you promised if people took advantage of your early-bird sign-up?  Did you remember to send those bonuses? It’s the little things that people notice and that will demonstrate integrity.

Establish Standards of Excellence

When you establish standards of excellence you customers come to expect that you give only your best.  This desire to pursue excellence as an integral part of your business model will drive you to find better ways of doing things to increase your efficiency and productivity.

Your customers and clients will recognize the level of excellence you bring to your business and will be willing to support you .  Of course, no one is perfect and we make mistakes.  Your customers and clients will accept genuine mistakes if you’re quick to acknowledge them. This will have less of a negative effect on your credibility.

Understand the Needs of Your Customers or Clients

Your customers and clients have needs that you must take the time and effort to understand.  It’s often been said that people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.  When you have clarity on who your ideal clients are and what they need, your next step in the client relationship building will be to satisfy those needs.  This may be through products that you’ve created or it may be through products created by others offered through affiliate marketing.  In either case your goal is to solve the problems that they have, or help them to relieve the pain they’re experiencing.

In conclusion, it’s important to have a vision for your business that includes providing superior customer service and create a mindset for building client relationships. The three steps outlined above show that this can be achieved with due diligence.

Where Do You Write Your Notes at Live Events

NAMS9 Live Event

Yesterday was the end of four amazing days of instruction on making a success of your online business.  I had the privilege of being motivated and trained by fourteen (14) different online marketers who are successful in what they do.  This outstanding training was all part of NAMS9 (Niche Affiliate Marketing System) and I’ll be sharing points I’ve benefited from later.

Write Your Notes

Do you attend live events?  And where do you write your notes you take so diligently?

This may seem like a silly question to some, but hang with me for a minute.   It’s very important if you’re going to benefit from them in the future.  In the past I bought stacks of stenographer’s notebook (a carryover from my days as an Administrative Assistant/Secretary with shorthand skills) and just numbered them 1,2,3 with the name of the event or training on the cover. Problem is I could not find what I wanted without searching through pad after pad later on.

Journal Note-Taking

Last year Eric Lofholm, my Sales Coach, recommended that every time you take a brand new course or attend a live event, you should purchase a really nice journal to write your notes in.  Not only will you be able to readily identify which journal has the notes for a specific training or event, but it can have a psychological effect as well.  It’s as if you value the notes more and may more quickly want to go back and refer to them…and implement what you’ve learned.

If you attend a weekly or monthly event, it also helps to keep one journal for these events.  You can easily see what was discussed and what you need to implement before the next session.  It’s also a great way to evaluate your progress.

It does not have to be expensive

Leather JournalI purchased a beautiful leather-bound journal for just under $15.00.  There are still lots of pages left after my notes from NAMS9.  I could save it for the next NAMS10 event in August, but I’ve decided to mark the page after my last page of notes, “End of NAMS training.”  The next page over is marked, “Implementation of NAMS training.”  This way I can go back to the points that I need to work on right away and set up my strategies for implementation with a deadline.

One of the things I observed this weekend was that many attendees took notes directly on their computer or other electronic device and that’s great for people who like to read on their computer.  Of course, making sure to clearly label your folder  will also be important.

Now, it’s your turn.  Where do you write your notes at live events or special training courses you take?  Are you able to find your notes quickly for follow-up? Do you have a strategy that works well for you?  Please share in the comments.

How to Monetize Social Media Networking Efforts

Many people are still hesitant to jump too deeply into social media networking because they’re still not convinced that it works.  And many who are heavily involved in social networking are still not seeing any financial benefits.  As a result, some business owners wonder if it’s worth the time and effort?

The foundation to achieving significant benefits from social networking is to build relationships.  One of the most effective ways to monetize social media networking efforts is to build relationships through blogging, and through your blog in particular.  Blogging is not always viewed as engaging in social networking, but it is definitely a social platform that allows you to build relationships with your readers and engage in social interactions.

One advantage blogging gives is that what you spend some time marketing your blog and attracting readers to your blog, when you provide good content your readers will keep coming back for more and you’ll be able to stay connected with them through your content.  This is especially valuable with potential clients and customers who may want to get to know you before they do business with you.

The key to maintaining your level of readership and attracting others to your blog is two-fold:

1.            Post to your blog on a regular basis.

2.            Get involved with other bloggers.

Even if you update your posts only once per week, two to three times per week is recommended, do so on a regular basis.  If your readers know that you’ll add a new post every Monday then they’ll get into that habit and come over to check out your posts.

Many of us are not consistent, and I’ve been guilty of that as well.  We may add a new post three days in a row and then none for a week.  It’s much better to spread these out so that there’s a pattern your readers will come to expect.

Getting involved in the blogosphere is important and it’s easy to do this by finding blogs in your niche, and sometimes even outside of your niche; read and leave comments on their posts.  Utilize social media to share and like the posts of others if you feel they are valuable and your community would benefit.  These bloggers will likely be happy to return the favor and visit your blog in return, and perhaps share your content on social media as well, thus creating a viral effect.

People do business with people they know, like and trust.  When you’ve built a community around your blog and your other social media platforms, it will be easier for people to want to do business with you when you promote a product or service, because they will have developed a relationship with you.

What are some things you do to monetize your social media activities?  Please share below.
